Witness Information - Attending Court

What do I do when I attend court?

You should ensure that you arrive at the place and before the time indicated on the document requiring your attendance.

You should check the Court List (normally displayed in the court foyer) or ask court staff to find out the courtroom where your case is being heard and proceed to that area of the court house.

Witnesses are not normally permitted to remain in the courtroom when their matter is being heard until after they have given their evidence. If you are already in the courtroom before it commences, you will be asked to leave. If the hearing of your case has already commenced you should not enter the courtroom, but wait in the area near the courtroom.

A court officer will call you when you are required to give evidence and you should report to that person, who will then guide you into the courtroom to the witness box.

If you enter or leave a courtroom when a Judge is sitting it is customary to bow in the direction of the judge. If you are sitting in a courtroom and the judge enters, it is customary to stand and bow in the direction of the judge. Similarly, if you or the Judge leave the Court, you should bow in the direction of the Judge.
