Regulation for council use of CCTV
17 May 2013
Local councils in NSW have been granted an exemption to use CCTV cameras in public places. A Regulation under the Privacy and Personal Information Act 1998 (PPIP Act) was proclaimed today.
Local councils in NSW are now exempt from some obligations under the PPIP Act relating to the collection of personal information by using a CCTV camera installed for the purpose of filming in a public place, and the disclosure to NSW Police of that information by way of live transmission.
For more details, download the Regulation.
We have produced a fact sheet to help local councils understand the changes to the laws regarding CCTV programs.
