International Women's Day 2016

Event date

International Women’s Day (IWD) – 8 March – is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The international theme for the 2016 campaign is #PledgeForParity. It is noted that worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement but progress towards gender parity has slowed in many places.

The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Then one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn't close entirely until 2133.

The Australian National Committee for UN Women has adopted a slightly different theme this year and one which has been prominent in the Australian media lately. That is one of domestic violence.

The theme for IWD 2016 is “change her future” which aims at raising awareness to stop violence against women and girls.
