The IPC supports International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 9 August 2025

The Information and Privacy Commission NSW (IPC) supports International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, commemorated annually on 9 August.

This year’s theme is ‘Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures,’ focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) transforming the ways of life, work, interactions, as well as creating a breakthrough across education, healthcare and agriculture. Indigenous Peoples have a right to own, control, and govern their own data, including through AI. This must be ensured by companies and developers that use Indigenous Peoples’ data, knowledge, or cultural heritage in AI systems.

The UN is hosting a virtual commemoration of the day on 9 August, to discuss who Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact are, and the pressing challenges that they face for their survival. The IPC is committed to promoting the right to access government-held information and the protection of privacy of people within diverse communities in NSW, and aims to ensure that its services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are accessible, relevant and useful.
