Privacy Awareness Month (PAM) is an annual initiative of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA), of which the Office of the NSW Privacy Commissioner is a member. APPA is the principal forum for privacy authorities in the Asia Pacific Region to form partnerships and exchange ideas about privacy regulation, new technologies and the management of privacy enquiries and complaints.
As a part of PAM, the Office of the NSW Privacy Commissioner, which is a part of the NSW Information and Privacy Commission (IPC), hosts and takes part in a variety of events and activities for individuals, businesses and government organisations.
While traditionally Privacy Awareness celebrations have taken place over a week, this year the event has grown so large it will be held throughout the month of May!
This year’s Privacy Awareness Month theme for NSW is ‘Privacy and You’ and is about protecting your personal information and understanding your rights and responsibilities under current privacy legislation. With the popularity of smartphones, mobile apps and using online services on the rise, it is important to know what privacy settings are available and how to use them.
Privacy Awareness Month Launch Event
To launch PAM 2016, First State Super in collaboration with the NSW Privacy Commissioner hosted an event with an address by the Hon Michael Kirby entitled ‘Privacy Matters: Why NSW Should Lead’.
In his address, the Hon. Michael Kirby centred on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee Inquiry into Remedies into Serious Invasions of Privacy in NSW and his views on the introduction of a statutory cause of action for serious invasions of privacy.
The event was attended by a number senior leaders in Government, public sector and private sector organisations. Click here to download a copy of the Hon. Michael Kirby’s address.
